Itinerary

Day 1

The day commences with a look at the picturesque “Bo-Kaap” – an historic area that became home to many Muslims and freed slaves after the abolition of slavery. Discover the unique culture, lifestyle and personality of the Cape Muslim community and their contribution to South Africa’s development. Enjoy a walk through the area and stop at the Bo-Kaap Museum which was established in 1978 as a satellite of the SA Cultural History Museum. Continue to Zonnebloem, originally District Six, and visit the living museum. Established in December 1994, it incorporates memories of District Six and the forced removals. With the struggle for the land now taking a different form, the museum supports the process of ‘reinventing’ District Six for the present. Depart the city area and head to the Cape Flats, where a stop will be made in Langa Township’s Gugu S’Thebe Arts & Cultural Centre. Housed in a brightly coloured building, the center is dedicated to the empowerment of the people of Langa and improving their socio-economic situation. Their focus is on alleviating unemployment by providing support services to entrepreneurs as well as the improvement of life in the township through Arts & Culture. Explore the local arts and crafts on display in the various studios, metal and pottery workshops, as well as the retail facility. Embark on a walking tour with a local registered guide providing the opportunity to be exposed to the community and lifestyle of Langa. Depart to Victoria & Alfred Waterfront for your trip to Robben Island. The excursion includes a return ferry trip across the bay, a guided coach tour of the island and a tour of the maximum-security prison where late former president, Nelson Mandela, was incarcerated. The tour will end with drop-off at your hotel in the early evening.
